The Power of Confession…Release It!

I’m going to talk about something today that might be a little tough for some, but I believe that in the end, you’ll understand my plight. It’s about confession. Now for some this may be easy, but for others it can be downright complicated, because it’s humbling and revealing. Nevertheless, it’s a powerful tool that can set us free, when we release it.

Straight up…confession begins when we open our mouths. It’s about admitting where you truly are. But I have to tell you, its deep roots stem from the heart and issues of real life. For instance, things like gossip, slander, lying, adultery, fornication, impure thoughts, unforgiveness, offense, outbursts of anger, hypocrisy, and the list could literally go on and on. Proverbs 4:23 confirms this when it says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out if it flows the issues of life.” Now some people may say, “I’m good. My heart’s okay. There’s no sin in me.” But then, 1 John 1:8 states, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Yet for those of us who know we sometimes mess up, we are encouraged with 1 John 1:9 which says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Point of fact, confession is admitting a fault or crime, revealing something hidden, or acknowledging some form of guilt or sin. By far, this is not an easy thing to do, yet it’s totally necessary. But I’ll tell you (and some of you know), there’s such an amazing release of freedom when it does take place. And this word is free for all of us to receive it. Thank God we have this opportunity to get it right. Amen!

Trust me, I’ve had many times in my life where I was battling with some form of sin, and the Lord beckoned me to get it right. It’s just uncomfortably smothering when you know that you’ve done something wrong in the sight of God, and you haven’t yet confessed it to Him or anyone else. We have to understand that there is absolutely nothing that we can keep secret with the Lord. He’s an all-knowing God. Yet it’s our job to confess it, repent (turn away from it), ask for forgiveness, and get that clearance in our spirit. That’s release. That’s true freedom.

Listen, I don’t know where you are right now in your life. Everything could be perfectly fine. However, if you’re going through something that you know is hidden within your heart, talk to someone whom you trust about the issue. Now when you talk to this person, make sure that they don’t agree with your sin or tell you that everything is okay with what you’re doing. A true friend, will tell you the truth and help you get through it God’s way with prayer. The Bible says in James 5:16, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of the righteous person has great power and wonderful results.”

Most importantly, I strongly encourage you to talk to God about it. Again, He already knows. He just wants you to confess it. So sit down and have that heart-to-heart talk with Him. Cry out to Him. He is waiting and listening, and willing to forgive you. Just do it. Keep this in mind…it’s better to confess it now, then to be exposed later. Save yourself the headache, heartache, shame, and embarrassment and release it. It’s smothering and it is sin. So get free from the grip of self and the enemy, and experience the true freedom and power of confession. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. (Philippians 4:13).
