The “Be-Attitudes”

I got up early this morning. My alarm clock went off at 5am. I got up about 5:20 and hit the coffee pot and I’ve been going over my new memory Scriptures. I just learned that the Sermon on the Mount is actually the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12). Wow! After all these years, I’ve read it over and over before and even had to memorize it for women’s Bible study. But that was a quick homework assignment. After that it was gone with the wind. But really, I was lead here earlier this week. And now I’ve retained it to memory and I’m hiding it in my heart for life practice. 

I would look at the Beatitudes as the “Be Attitudes” and the “Blessed” Attitudes, because it talks about who are blessed and what can be obtained when we have these types of experiences and attitudes. Meaning when I recognize that I am poor in spirit, it shows that I need God. He is saying that I’m blessed when I recognize this, and then when I realize this, the kingdom of heaven is mine. I can claim that as I rely and continually trust in Him. Amazing!

I know about “blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted” to be so true, because I experienced it in my own life when my dad died with stage 4 lung cancer. I was comforted by the love of God through prayers of others, words of encouragement, wise counsel, and by Him…period. It was truly felt. I was comforted. And that was a blessing!

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. That’s the humble one. And God is working on me with this one. The Scripture I’m reminded of that is hidden within my heart is 1 Peter 5:6, “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.” That He may exalt you is the inheriting the earth thing. Giving you the ordained territory when you’re humble in due season. Amazing! My uncle told me in so many words, “Don’t just run with one Scripture Court…it’s got to line up with others to gain even further understanding of what God is trying to say to you.”

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. I love this one, because when I run to the Lord in intimate prayer and a deeper study with Him, He fills me with more understanding and revelation of His word. When I want to do right by Him, He fills me with His presence and the right fruit.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. I need mercy from God. And I’m sure you need mercy too. So we need to consider others and give it to them as well. This basically says that when I extend mercy to others (i.e. give them the benefit of the doubt or another chance without scolding or judging them), then I’m open and blessed to receive mercy from the Father too. Yay!   

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. I have to see God one day…but in a good light. I know we all will have to see Him, because we have to go before the Judgment Seat of Christ someday. But I want to be right before Him. You know what I mean?! So my heart has to be pure…meaning I need to allow God to purge every impure thought, word, or action out of me now….before that great day. First Peter 1:16 says, “Be ye holy, for I am holy.” And if I’m pure in heart, then I’ll be able to see Him one day in right standing. And I’m looking forward to that, and I hope you are too!

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. That was really eye-opening for me when I read that, because I was just saying that I want to be a woman of peace (remember we should have on the shoes of peace). Meaning, God blesses us for being a peacemaker (i.e. making peace with and between others). And when we do this, we are called the children of God. So any time there is strife, it is not of God. Heart-check!

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. We will be persecuted as Christians. This happens inside the church and outside the church. And no, this does not feel good. It hurts actually no matter how it’s done. But God says that we are blessed with the kingdom of heaven when we go through this pain for Him. The Bible also says in Matthew 5:11-12, that we are blessed when men shall revile (curse) us, and persecute us, and shall say all manner of evil against us falsely for Christ name sake. He said, “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” So although it’s not right, it is alright with me, because God says that I am blessed with a reward in heaven for taking it. Amen!     

This is awesome and so refreshing!  There’s nothing like spending that quality time in God’s word early in the morning (or whenever you do), where He reveals His truth to you. No matter how long we’ve been saved, there’s always room for growth and fresh revelation. I encourage you to spend that precious time in His word sis, and let God bless you with more knowledge, wisdom and understanding. It’s so tasty…I’m a living witness! Yum!
